Why access matters

An emptying visit depends on a tanker being able to get close enough to the tank, through your gate and along your lane. Tankers and hose lengths differ between contractors, so this page does not give typical figures. It helps you take your own measurements and compare them with the limits your contractor gives you.

How to use it

  1. Measure from where a tanker could safely park to the tank lid, and note any narrow gateways, low branches or cables on the way.
  2. Ask your contractor for their hose reach, lift, vehicle width and height and laden weight, and type those into the second box on each line.
  3. Where a line says "Problem" or "Ask", talk to the contractor before booking. They may have a different vehicle, or may be able to suggest another arrangement.
  4. Copy the message at the bottom and send it with your booking request.

Whoever takes the waste away must be a registered waste carrier. GOV.UK says the company you use to dispose of waste sludge "must be a registered waste carrier", and you can look a company up on the Environment Agency waste carrier register.

What this page does not do

It does not price a job, and it is not a survey. It never asks you to open a tank, and nobody should stand on or near an open tank. Leave all emptying to the contractor.
