Official sources only

Every rule and figure comes from an official source for the nation it applies to, and shows the date we checked it. See how we source the rules.

Nation-specific

We never assume the rules in England apply in Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland. Rules pages ask for your nation and only show that nation's sourced rules.

No testing claims

We don't test products. Buying guides compare the makers' published specs and official guidance, state the criteria behind every "best" heading, and say so at the top. We never give star ratings.

No miracle claims

We don't say that additives or "septic treatments" fix or prevent problems unless an official source says so.

Pages about the rules, house sales or neighbours are plain-English guides, not legal advice. We point you to the regulator, a solicitor or conveyancer, or a qualified installer.

Safety first

We never advise entering a tank or chamber, emptying a tank yourself, or doing electrical work on pumps or UV units. Private water pages tell you to contact your council and get your water tested, and to call NHS 111 if anyone is unwell.

Bylines

Every article is by the Rowanspring team. We don't use personal names or invented personas.

Corrections

If we get something wrong, we fix it and say so. See our corrections policy.
