How our tools work
Each Rowanspring tool does three things:
- Asks for your nation first. The rules differ in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, so a tool only uses the rules for the nation you choose.
- Matches your answers against checked rules. Every rule a tool uses is stored with its official source and the date we checked it. Rules we haven't checked are never used.
- Shows its working. Each result says which official body the rule comes from and when we checked it, and links to the official page.
When we don't know
If we haven't confirmed a rule for your nation, the tool tells you and links to the regulator's guidance. We'd rather say "not confirmed yet" than guess.
Your figures
Where a tool needs a price, such as an emptying charge or an installer's quote, it asks you to enter your own. We only show a cost range where a named official or published source gives one, with the date.
What a result is, and isn't
A result is a plain-English guide to the official rules and your figures. It isn't a survey, a quote or legal advice. Only the regulator can say whether a system complies, and a qualified installer can tell you what work it needs.
Your data
Our tools work in your browser. Your answers aren't sent to us. The printable system card is saved only in your own browser, if you use it.
